What Is xG? Expected Goals Explained for Football Fans
Expected Goals changed how analysts watch football. One number tells you more about a match than the scoreline ever could — here's how it works.
# What Is xG? Expected Goals Explained
The scoreline lies. xG tells the truth.
That's the short version. The longer version is that Expected Goals — xG — is a probability assigned to every shot in football, based on how likely that shot was to go in. Add up all the shot probabilities in a match and you get each team's xG total: a measure of the *quality* of chances created, not just the number of shots.
A team that creates 2.3 xG has generated enough high-quality chances to score roughly 2.3 goals on average. If they only scored one, they underperformed. If they scored three, they got lucky. Both things happen constantly in football, which is why results are so noisy in the short term.
## How Each Shot Gets Its Value
Every shot is assigned a value between 0 and 1. A tap-in from two yards out might be 0.80 — it goes in 80% of the time. A 35-yard speculative effort might be 0.02. The inputs that determine the value:
- **Location** — distance from goal and angle to the target
- **Shot type** — foot, header, or direct free kick
- **Assist type** — cross, through ball, or cutback
- **Defensive pressure** — was the shooter under pressure or unmarked?
Modern models are trained on hundreds of thousands of historical shots. The probability assigned to each chance reflects real outcomes across a massive sample, not someone's gut feeling.
## Why xG Beats Shots on Target
Shots on target was the best proxy for attacking quality before xG existed. It's still useful, but it treats a Salah one-on-one with the keeper the same as a tame header straight at him from 18 yards.
xG separates the genuinely dangerous from the merely on-target. A team with 8 shots on target but an xG of 0.6 was shooting from poor positions. A team with 4 shots on target but an xG of 2.1 was creating real danger. The second team should have won. Often they didn't — and that's the point.
## What xG Tells You About a Result
Football is a low-scoring sport. Results are heavily influenced by luck in the short term. A team can dominate for 70 minutes and lose 1-0 to a counter-attack.
xG cuts through that. Over a single match, the team with the higher xG *should* have won. Over a season, xG is a far better predictor of future performance than actual goals scored.
Research consistently shows that a team's xG over the previous 10 matches predicts their next result more accurately than their actual goal record. This is why GoalVio's prediction engine uses xG as its primary input — not results.
## Reading xG During a Match
**Arsenal 1–0 Chelsea** | Arsenal xG: 0.8 | Chelsea xG: 1.9
The scoreline says Arsenal won. The xG says Chelsea were the better team and got unlucky. Over the next five matches, you'd expect Chelsea to perform better than their recent results suggest — and Arsenal to regress.
That gap between xG and actual goals is where prediction value lives.
## The Limits
xG is powerful but not perfect. It doesn't fully capture individual quality — Mbappe converts chances that average strikers miss. It doesn't account for goalkeeper quality. And a single match xG figure has high variance; the metric becomes reliable over 6–10 matches, not one.
Use it as a signal, not a verdict.
