# What Is Momentum in Football? The GoalVio Momentum Score Explained When you open the Intelligence tab on any GoalVio match page, you'll see a Momentum Score — a 0–100 bar for each team, with five coloured tiles showing their last five results. It looks simple. There's a lot going on underneath it. ## Momentum Is Not the Scoreline This is the most important thing to understand. **Momentum is not who is winning. It is who is currently controlling the game and creating pressure.** Consider this situation: > Team A leads 1–0 at half time. In the last 15 minutes of the first half, Team B had 5 shots, 3 corners, and sustained possession around the box. Their dangerous attack count is climbing. The scoreboard says Team A is winning. Momentum may heavily favour Team B. That gap — between the scoreline and the underlying pressure — is exactly what the Momentum Score is designed to surface. A team can be losing and building toward a goal. A team can be winning and hanging on. The score tells you what has happened. Momentum tells you what is happening. ## What Drives the Momentum Score The GoalVio Momentum Score is a pre-match metric built from recent form data. It measures how a team has been performing across their last five to six matches — not just results, but the quality behind those results. **Form string (results)** — The foundation. Last five results, weighted by recency. The most recent match carries the highest weight; the oldest the least. Wins score highest, draws partially (roughly 40% of a win), losses zero. **Goals scored rate** — How freely the team has been scoring over their last six matches. A team averaging 2.5 goals per match scores significantly higher than one averaging 0.8. A team can be winning while scoring very few goals — which suggests fragility. If their striker gets injured or opponents start defending deeper, results will drop. A team scoring freely is more robustly in form. This component is normalised against the league average, so a team scoring 2.5 in a high-scoring league is treated differently from one scoring 2.5 in a low-scoring league. **Defensive record** — How hard has the team been to score against? Clean sheets and low goals conceded per match push this component higher.
